The experience

The tour starts at Barrios Square, where thousands of Salvadorans move through daily: a place where concerts, exhibitions and street vendors converge. Your guide walks you through the stories of presidents executed there and the legends woven into the plaza's past. From there you move to Liberty Square and its monument, the symbolic heart of the city's independence, where you'll see how colonial and modern architecture sit side by side and learn why the flags of Central America share their blue and white.

Rosary Church is one of the few Brutalist churches on the continent, designed by Rubén Martínez with stained glass windows and a structure that breaks every convention. The church stays locked even though it holds daily masses. Your guide explains why and tells the stories of the people buried there. At the National Library, a seven-floor building opened around the clock, you'll see the most modern collection in Central America and take in views across the city. The San Salvador Cathedral holds the crypt of Romero of America, the first Salvadoran saint, assassinated while saying Mass in 1980. Thousands of pilgrims visit his tomb each year. Your guide connects these sites to the civil war that ran from 1980 to 1992 and the gang violence that followed, then to how the city has rebuilt itself.
