The Experience

The gates open at 6 AM and the limestone cliffs are already throwing long shadows across the valley floor. By the time most visitors arrive, you're already inside—your skip-the-line ticket means you walk straight past the entry booth while others are still buying theirs. The Valley of the Kings holds 63 tombs carved between the 16th and 11th centuries BC, but only eleven are open to the public, and your standard ticket gets you into any three of them. The valley itself is stark—a gorge of pale limestone under the pyramidal peak of al-Qurn, the mountain the ancient Egyptians chose specifically because its shape echoed the pyramids they'd abandoned elsewhere. That choice mattered: the pharaohs buried here—Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Tuthmosis III, Seti I—were hidden in these hills to escape the looting that had ravaged the tombs of Giza. The walls are still vivid with hieroglyphs and painted scenes meant to guide the dead into the afterlife, and the deeper you go, the more the modern world falls away. If three tombs feel like a start, you can upgrade to special access. Tutankhamun's tomb is the most visited for obvious reasons—it's the one they found nearly intact. Seti I's is considered the most beautiful, with ceilings so precisely painted they still look wet. Ramesses V and VI share a tomb famous for its astronomical ceiling. The West Valley has only one tomb open to visitors—Ay's—and it's quieter, less crowded, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. You choose which upgrades matter to you when you book; the ticket is flexible that way.

Bring your ID and water. The site runs until 5 PM, so you've got a full day if you want it, but most people finish three tombs in three to four hours and head back to Luxor town for lunch.
