The Experience

You hear it before you see it—the slap of water against the hull, that pop music drifting from the beach somewhere behind us. I was still fiddling with my harness when our guide, Ahmed, grinned and said, “Ready?” I nodded, but honestly my stomach was doing little flips. The boat picked up speed and suddenly my feet weren’t touching anything—just air and this weird mix of sun-warmed wind and sea spray. The Red Sea below looked like someone had spilled blue ink everywhere, with these crazy patches of coral just visible under the surface. I tried to wave at my friend but mostly just flailed.

Floating up there—maybe 50 meters?—it got quiet in a way I didn’t expect. You could hear gulls somewhere far off and the faint hum of the boat engine shrinking away. For eight or ten minutes (felt longer), it was just me and this huge sky over Sharm El Sheikh. The Sinai mountains looked faded in the distance, almost unreal. We got dropped back at the VIP beach after parasailing, which had these bean bags all over and music that kept switching from Egyptian pop to something more chill. There was a bar if you wanted something stronger than water—I stuck with juice because my head was still spinning a bit from being up so high.
