The experience
Saqqara spreads across the desert west of Cairo, and this tour moves through it by private air-conditioned vehicle with a guide who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language. Your guide meets you in your hotel lobby at a time you choose, then drives you to the necropolis. The Step Pyramid (the oldest stone pyramid in Egypt, built in the 27th century BC) anchors the morning. From there you move through tombs and temples that show how burial practices and elite life changed over centuries.
Inside the Unas Pyramid, you see the Pyramid Texts carved into the walls: the first time ancient Egyptians inscribed religious beliefs directly into a tomb's stone. The Serapeum holds massive sarcophagi in underground galleries where sacred Apis bulls were buried. The Tomb of Mereruka, belonging to a high-ranking official, shows detailed scenes of daily work and ceremony. Nearby, the Tomb of Kagemni displays reliefs of the same elite duties. The Tomb of Khnumhotep and Niankhkhnum offers a rare window into how two men were depicted together, unusual enough to tell you something about their relationship and social standing.
The tour runs 8 hours and covers ground on foot within each site. Your guide handles all entrance fees and transport between stops. Bring water and snacks. The desert has no shops, and the day is long. Hotel drop-off closes the loop when you're done.

Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 10 years); Infant (under 6): free.
What is inside the Unas Pyramid that makes it different from other pyramids at Saqqara?
The Unas Pyramid holds the Pyramid Texts, ancient religious inscriptions carved into its interior walls. These are the first known examples of such texts, offering direct insight into how early Egyptians understood the afterlife and the journey the dead were meant to take.
What do the tombs of Mereruka and Kagemni show about life in ancient Egypt?
Both tombs feature detailed carved reliefs depicting the daily work and ceremonial duties of Egypt's elite officials. Mereruka's tomb, belonging to a high-ranking official, shows scenes of administration and ritual. Kagemni's tomb displays similar themes of authority and responsibility, giving a picture of how the ruling class lived and worked.
What is the Serapeum and why is it part of this tour?
The Serapeum of Saqqara is an underground burial complex for sacred Apis bulls, featuring large stone sarcophagi in galleries beneath the desert floor. It reveals a different kind of ancient Egyptian reverence, not for human rulers, but for animals believed to hold divine power.
How does the tour handle getting around Saqqara?
A private air-conditioned vehicle transports you between each site within the necropolis. Your guide meets you at your hotel, drives you to Saqqara, moves you from one attraction to the next, and returns you to your accommodation at the end of the day.
