The experience
The day starts before dawn. Your driver picks you up at 3:30am and heads north into the Eastern Desert for a three-hour drive to Saint Paul Monastery, set against dramatic cliffs of the plateau. The monastery dates to the fourth century AD and holds caves where the hermit Saint Paul lived, along with churches covered in frescoes. Your private guide explains what these spaces mean in Coptic Christianity: the theology, the history, the reason monks chose this remote landscape.
After Saint Paul, you drive south for about half an hour to the Monastery of Saint Anthony, the oldest monastery in Egypt and among the oldest in the world. Founded in the fourth century, it still functions as a working retreat where Coptic Christians come for religious retreats. You'll see several churches, a library, and the small cave where Saint Anthony himself lived as a hermit. Lunch happens here, with time to sit in the desert scenery before the return journey.
The full day (drive, two sites, guide, lunch, hotel return) takes about fourteen hours. A vegetarian meal is available if you request it when you book. Your guide speaks English, French, German or Russian depending on availability.
