The experience
The tour runs about four hours and begins with hotel pickup in Aswan. Your guide drives you by private car to the pier, where you board a motorboat to reach Kalabsha on Lake Nasser. The site holds several monuments that UNESCO moved to the island when the New Aswan Dam raised the water level: the Temple of Kalabsha itself, dedicated to the god Mandolis and dating from the Roman period; Beit El-Ouali, carved into rock with painted scenes still visible after 3,300 years from the time of Ramses II; two stelae from the Pharaonic era; the remains of the Temple of Gerf Hussein; and the Greek Kiosk of Quertassi. Historical graffiti carved nearly 3,600 years ago survives here as well.
After exploring Kalabsha, you return to the car and drive to the pier between Aswan's two dams, where a second motorboat takes you to Philae. The island of Agilkia now holds the monuments of Philae, which were submerged at their original site before UNESCO relocated them. The Temple of Isis dominates the complex, dedicated to the goddess of magic, while the Temple of Hathor, devoted to the goddess of love and motherhood, draws particular attention. The Kiosk of the Roman emperor Trajan completes the major structures. Your guide points out where the original Philae site now lies underwater.
Both sites are accessible only by motorboat, and the tour includes all boat rides and site entry tickets. The air-conditioned car remains private throughout, and your guide speaks French and holds Egyptology credentials.
