The experience
Your guide picks you up from your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise ship and drives you by private air-conditioned vehicle to the West Bank of the Nile. The day centers on three distinct sites, each telling a different part of Egypt's story. Medinet Habu is the archaeological complex where the temple stands with its imposing architecture and intricately carved walls. The site sits near the foot of the Theban Hills and holds records of the 18th to 20th dynasties of the New Kingdom.
From there you move to Deir el-Medina, the ancient village where the artisans lived who carved and painted the tombs in the Valley of the Kings during the same period (roughly 1550–1080 BC). The paintings inside the tombs here appear so fresh that the centuries seem to collapse. The Valley of the Queens comes last, where the wives of pharaohs were buried alongside princes, princesses and members of the nobility during the 18th, 19th and 20th dynasties. In ancient times it was called Ta-Set-Neferu, meaning "the place of the Children of the Pharaoh." After the final site, your guide returns you to your hotel or ship.
