The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the cool air—just before dawn, it’s almost chilly in Luxor. Our driver picked us up while it was still dark, and by the time we reached the riverbank, you could already hear the quiet buzz of other travelers. We crossed the Nile by motor boat, watching lantern lights flicker on the water. The smell of fresh mint tea drifted over from a small table near the launch site—honestly, it helped shake off that early-morning sleepiness.
Climbing into the basket felt a bit surreal. Our pilot, Mahmoud, gave us a quick rundown (he’s been flying these balloons for years). As we lifted off, you could see farmers already out in their fields below—tiny figures moving between rows of sugarcane and palm trees. The sun crept up behind the hills, lighting up the temples and tombs on Luxor’s West Bank in soft gold. It’s quiet up there except for the occasional whoosh from the burner and distant roosters crowing. If you look closely, you’ll spot goats wandering near mudbrick houses and kids waving as you float past.
