The Experience
We shuffled out before dawn, still half-asleep, and the streets of Luxor were just shadows. Our driver grinned when he saw our bleary faces—apparently everyone looks like this at 5:30 a.m. The van was quiet except for one couple whispering about coffee. Crossing the Nile by boat felt almost secretive, with the river smelling faintly sweet and cool mist clinging to everything. I kept thinking, “Am I really doing this?”
The balloon crew barely spoke English but smiled a lot—one guy handed me a bottle of water and pointed up at the sky like, “Wait for it.” When we finally climbed into the basket, my heart was pounding (not sure if it was nerves or excitement). The burners roared to life and suddenly we were floating—no jolt, just this gentle lift. Luxor spread out below us: tiny fields, palm groves, the West Bank monuments looking almost unreal from above. Our guide tried to name each temple as we drifted by—I caught “Hatshepsut” and “Valley of the Kings,” but mostly I just stared.
The sun came up behind us and everything turned gold for a few minutes. Someone laughed when their hat nearly flew off; another person wiped away tears (I pretended not to notice). It’s weird how quiet it gets up there—just wind and an occasional hiss from the burner. After maybe an hour (honestly I lost track), we touched down in a dusty field where some kids waved at us like we were astronauts landing on Mars. Still can’t believe I did that.
