The Experience

The pickup happens at 4am — your hotel door, a car waiting, the city still dark. You're driven to Cairo's domestic terminal for a flight that lands you in Luxor two hours later, where your guide meets you holding a sign with your name. What follows is a full immersion into the Necropolis of Thebes: the Valley of the Kings first, where you walk past the tombs of various dynasties and stand inside the Temple of Deir El Bahari, carved into the cliff face. The scale of it stops you. Then the Temple of Hatshepsut, the mortuary temple of a female pharaoh, its terraces rising in tiers against the desert. On the drive back across the Nile, you pass the Colossi of Memnon — two colossal sitting statues of Amenophis III, facing the river, their size almost unreal.

Lunch happens at a local restaurant before you head to Karnak Temple, which is less a single temple than a city of temples built over centuries.
