The experience
The tour begins at the Hanging Church, named for its nave suspended above a passage in the Fortress of Babylon, a Roman structure now mostly buried under six meters of accumulated earth. Twenty-nine steps lead up to the entrance. Early travelers called it the Church of the Staircase. The 19th-century facade with twin steeples frames a narrow courtyard, and the 11th-century porch sits beyond, giving the approach its own architectural weight before you step inside.
From there you move to the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, built in the 4th century and completed by the 5th, dedicated to two holy soldiers martyred in Syria. The crypt descends 10 meters below the nave: the spot where Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus are said to have rested during their flight into Egypt. The church burned in the fire of Fustat around 750, was restored in the 8th century, and has been rebuilt constantly since, yet it remains a model of early Coptic architecture. The oldest and most valuable icons hang on the south wall. Three naves divide the central room, separated by two rows of pilasters.
The Cave Church on Mokattam Mountain is carved directly into the stone, a rare architectural artifact that draws visitors from across the world. The Tanner Monastery (also called the Monastery of Saint-Simon le Tanneur) sits within the mountain itself, its distinctive architecture blending into the high stone. The tour ends at the Monastery of St. George, founded at the end of the 7th century and now the residence of the Coptic patriarchs. It is not open to the public, but the guide explains its role in the faith and its connection to the saint martyred in the 4th century. A Greek cemetery nearby holds tombs built in Hellenistic style, their shapes and angel statues visible from outside.

What is the Hanging Church and why is it called that?
The Hanging Church sits suspended above a passage in the Fortress of Babylon, a Roman fortress in Old Cairo whose tower is now mostly buried underground. Twenty-nine steps lead to the entrance. The nave itself hangs above the passage below, which is why early travelers nicknamed it the Church of the Staircase.
Can I visit the Monastery of St. George during this tour?
The Monastery of St. George is not open to the public. It has been the residence of the Coptic patriarchs since the 19th century. Your guide will explain its history and significance from outside, and you will see the Greek cemetery with its Hellenistic-style tombs nearby.
What is special about the crypt in the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus?
The crypt descends 10 meters below the nave and is the site where the Holy Family (Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus) are said to have rested during their flight into Egypt. When the Nile floods, the crypt often fills with water.
How long does the tour take and what is included?
The tour runs six to seven hours and includes private transportation from your pickup point, all entry fees to the four churches, and the Egyptologist guide throughout. Public transportation options are available nearby if you prefer to arrange your own travel.
