The Experience
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization opened in 2021 with collections drawn from five major Egyptian museums, including the Egyptian Museum and the Coptic Museum. Your guide walks you through two kinds of galleries: a chronological path from Archaic through contemporary periods, and thematic rooms built around subjects like State and Society, Material Culture, and the Dawn of Civilization. The Royal Mummies gallery is the centerpiece—the 22 mummies, including 18 pharaohs and four queens, arrived in 2021 during the Pharaohs' Golden Parade, a ceremonial procession through Cairo's streets. UNESCO provided technical support for the museum's design and collections.
After the museum, your guide takes you into Coptic Cairo, also called Old Cairo, a neighborhood of narrow lanes and early Christian churches. You visit the Hanging Church, built partly over a Roman fortress and named for the way its nave hangs above the street below, and Abu Serga, where tradition holds the holy family found refuge during their flight into Egypt. The Coptic Museum, a separate collection housed in a 19th-century palace, holds artifacts of the Coptic Christian community—one of the world's oldest—and carries an additional entrance fee. The whole outing runs two to three hours with your private guide and driver, who picks you up from your hotel in Cairo or Giza in an air-conditioned vehicle and returns you at the end.

What's inside the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization that makes it different from the Egyptian Museum?
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization opened in 2021 with collections from five major Egyptian museums combined into one building. It arranges exhibits two ways: chronologically from Archaic through modern periods, and thematically around subjects like the Nile, writing, state and society, and beliefs and thinking. The Royal Mummies gallery holds 18 kings and four queens moved there in 2021.
Do I need to pay extra for the Coptic Museum and the churches?
The Coptic Museum entrance fee is not included in the tour price and costs extra per person. The Hanging Church and Abu Serga are visited as part of the tour, though their entrance fees are separate.
What does the private guide explain about the Hanging Church and Abu Serga?
Your Egyptologist guide leads you through both churches in Coptic Cairo. The Hanging Church is named for its nave, which hangs above the street, built partly over a Roman fortress. Abu Serga is where tradition holds the holy family sheltered during their flight into Egypt. Both are early Christian structures adorned with icons.
How does the pickup work if I'm staying in Giza instead of Cairo?
Hotel pickup is included from anywhere in Cairo or Giza. Your private driver collects you from your hotel and returns you there after the tour ends, so you don't need to arrange your own transport to the museum or Coptic Cairo.
