The Experience
Your guide picks you up at your hotel in a private air-conditioned car and drives you to Al-Hakim Mosque, a fourteenth-century structure that stands as one of Egypt's most recognizable Islamic buildings. The architecture of the mosque—its arches, domes and carved stone—shows the scale of medieval Islamic craftsmanship. From there you move to the Refaai Mosque, built in the nineteenth century and holding the royal mausoleums of Egypt's late royal family.
Next is Ibn Tulun Mosque, built in the ninth century and the oldest in Egypt. The real draw here is climbing to the top of the minaret: from there you see the whole expanse of Islamic Cairo laid out—the rooftops, the narrow streets, the other minarets rising from the city. After that comes Old Cairo, where you visit the Hanging Church (built in the fourth century and perched on top of a ruined fortress), the Monastery of Saint George and the Abu Serga church, which holds a hidden crypt connected to the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. The bazaar stop at Khan el-Khalili puts you into the oldest market in the Middle East, where you can watch the daily life of Cairo's traders and shoppers move through the stalls.
You walk Moez Street, the traditional heart of Islamic Cairo, where the rhythm of medieval commerce and craft still shapes the day. Lunch happens at Abu Tark, a well-known koshary restaurant where you eat the dish that defines Cairo street food. The tour closes with felucca sailing on the Nile—a wooden sailboat ride that gives you the river from water level, a different angle on the city. The whole day runs seven to eight hours.
