The Experience

The Museum of Islamic Art holds pieces from India, China, Iran, the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, Egypt, North Africa and Andalusia — a single building containing Islamic art across centuries and continents. From there, your guide takes you to Al-Azhar Mosque, which has stood since the Fatimid era and is the second oldest continuously existing university in the world after Al-Qarawiyyin. The mosque shaped Islamic scholarship for over a thousand years.

Al-Moez Al-Fatimi Street is where the tour opens up. The street holds 221 Islamic monuments and was designed as an open museum of Islamic architecture. Walking it, you move through Egyptian, Ottoman, Andalusian and Byzantine styles layered into mosques, fountains, houses and other structures — the heart of old Cairo as it emerged during the Fatimid state. The street runs from Bab Zuweila in the south to Bab Al-Futuh in the north, a main artery that shaped the city's spiritual life.

The tour ends at the Qansuh Al-Ghouri Agency, a five-story structure built in 1504 on Muhammad Abdo Street. The ground and first floors once held merchant shops; the upper floors contained about 60 rooms for visitors, most of them traders. The agency sits around a rectangular open courtyard, its main facade facing south. After the agency, your driver returns you to your hotel.
