The Experience

“You never really leave Cairo,” our guide Youssef grinned as we stepped out of the airport van, “it just follows you home.” I laughed but didn’t know what he meant until later. We started at the Grand Egyptian Museum—honestly, it’s massive. The air inside was cool and smelled faintly like old paper and something sweet I couldn’t place. Youssef knew every weird fact about pharaohs (he called them “the original influencers”—I still chuckle at that). He pointed out a tiny carved cat statue I’d have missed. There were families everywhere, kids running between glass cases, and for a second it felt less like a museum and more like someone’s memory of Egypt.

Next stop: the Giza Pyramids. I’d seen them in photos forever but standing there is different—like time goes sideways for a bit. We rode camels around them (my camel was named “Bob Marley,” no joke), and the ground was gritty under my sandals. The sun hit everything gold and hot; I could smell dust and something floral from a nearby perfume stall. Youssef told us how his grandmother used to picnic here when she was young, which made me wonder what these stones have seen over thousands of years. At some point I just stopped talking because… well, words didn’t fit.

If your flight back is late, you get to wander Khan el-Khalili market or Old Cairo too. We had time for the market—loud, bright, everyone bargaining or laughing. One shopkeeper tried to teach me how to say “thank you” in Arabic (I failed pretty badly). There was this moment on the Nile boat ride after—a quiet patch where all you could hear was water slapping wood—and I remember thinking how far from Hurghada we felt even though it’s just a day trip to Cairo. So yeah, maybe Youssef was right about never leaving.
