The experience
The drive from Cairo takes most of the first day, arriving in Siwa by midday. After checking in, you visit Shali Fortress (the ancient ruins that define the oasis skyline), then explore local handicraft shops where Siwan artisans sell traditional woven goods and pottery. The afternoon opens onto one of the freshwater springs: Cleopatra's Bath or Fatnas Island, where you can swim in water that stays warm year-round. Dinner is a traditional Siwan meal, either at a local restaurant or arranged through your tour operator.
Day two centers on the Temple of the Oracle, an archaeological site your guide leads you through with context on its historical weight. From there you move to the Mountain of the Dead, a necropolis of rock-cut tombs from Pharaonic times carved into the ridge above the oasis floor. A scenic drive crosses the Great Sand Sea. Most tours stop to let you try sandboarding or camel riding across the dunes. Lunch is authentic Egyptian food back in town. The afternoon climbs Dakrur Mountain through date palm gardens, ending with views across the whole oasis from the top. An optional evening cultural performance (music, dance, storytelling) is available if you want it.
The final day starts before sunrise at the Siwa Salt Lakes, where the desert light shifts through colors as the sun rises. After breakfast and checkout, you visit the Siwa House Museum to absorb the oasis's history and culture, then walk through the Date Palm Grove to see the ancient trees and learn how the community has farmed here for generations. A final lunch in town precedes the afternoon drive back to Cairo, where you arrive in the evening.
