The Experience
You step out of the car and it’s just—quiet. Not silent, though. There’s this soft wind that moves the sand around your shoes, and I remember thinking how the light here feels almost blue at sunset. Our guide, Ahmed, handed me sweet tea before we even set up camp. He joked about “city people” not knowing how to build a fire (guilty). The Black Desert was our first stop—those old volcanoes look like someone spilled charcoal over the land. Climbing up wasn’t easy (I’m still finding sand in my socks), but the view…honestly, it made me forget I was tired.
Later, we wandered through what Ahmed called “the mountain of crystals.” He picked one up and pressed it into my palm—cool and rough at the same time. You start to notice little things: how everyone moves a bit slower out here, how even laughter sounds different bouncing off the rocks. Lunch was simple but tasted better than anything I’ve had after a morning outside. It’s wild to think camels used to cross this valley for days; we just stood there watching the sky change color.
By nightfall in the White Desert, our camp felt like its own tiny world. The shapes in the chalky rocks looked almost unreal in moonlight—someone said it was like walking on another planet and yeah, I get that now. We ate dinner together sitting cross-legged; bread still warm from the fire. At some point I stopped trying to take photos because none of them caught what it actually felt like. In the morning, dipping my hands in a hot spring before breakfast was one of those small joys you don’t expect but remember anyway.
