The experience

The driver picks you up from your Quito hotel in the morning and heads northwest toward Mindo, a 2-hour drive through the foothills. Once you arrive, the first stop is a hummingbird sanctuary where you'll watch dozens of species feed and hover in real time. The cloud forest here holds some of the highest rates of plant endemism in the world, which is why the birds are so abundant. The diversity includes orchids, bromeliads, heliconias, ferns, mosses and lichens packed into the primary forest canopy.

Next is the butterfly garden, where you walk through a space holding 1,200 colorful butterflies at once and see all four stages of their life cycle. After that comes the artisan chocolate factory, where you watch the entire process unfold, from cacao bean to finished chocolate, and understand why Ecuadorian cacao is prized. If time allows and you want to add it, there's a canopy zip-line option available on the day.

On the return to Quito, you can request a stop at the Middle of the World Monument (Mitad del Mundo) without extra transport cost, though entry fees are separate.
