The Experience

We were already bumping along a winding road out of Quito before I realized how green everything was getting — like the city just faded behind us. Richard, our guide (he’s lived here his whole life), kept pointing out birds I’d never spot on my own. At one stop he handed me binoculars and whispered “tanager,” but honestly I was still staring at this bright blue butterfly that landed on my sleeve for half a second. The air smelled kind of sweet and earthy, almost like wet leaves after rain even though it wasn’t raining yet. There was a street dog trotting alongside us for a while — Richard said he knows most of them by name.

I didn’t expect to sweat so much on the first hike — not hard exactly, just humid and that sort of sticky feeling you get in the cloud forest. We stopped for water near a patch of orchids clinging to a mossy branch, and Richard explained how some only bloom once a year. He’s got stories about every plant and bird; sometimes he’d break off mid-sentence to listen for hummingbirds (which actually sound more like tiny engines than birds). Lunch was in a little town where everyone seemed to know Richard — someone waved from across the street while we tried something with plantains (I still don’t know what it was called). We could’ve done ziplining or chocolate tasting but honestly just sitting there watching the clouds roll over the hills felt right.

On the way back we stopped at the Middle of the World Monument. It’s touristy but kind of fun to jump between hemispheres — I messed up my balance test completely, which made Richard laugh. The drive home felt quieter; maybe it was just tiredness or maybe that soft light you get late afternoon in Ecuador. I keep thinking about those flashes of color in the trees and how peaceful everything felt out there.
