The experience
The tour begins at Mindo Central Park at 5:50 a.m., when the forest is most active. Your expert local guide leads you to the reserve's hummingbird feeders, where species like the Booted Racket-tail, White-necked Jacobin, Purple-throated Woodstar and Rufous-tailed Hummingbird arrive throughout the morning. Telescope and binoculars are provided, and the guide watches for every new arrival and points out behavior and field marks as birds come in.
Beyond hummingbirds, the feeders and surrounding forest attract toucans: including the Chocó Toucan, Yellow-throated Toucan and the Plate-billed Mountain Toucan (most often seen January through May and June onward), along with tanagers in shades of gold, silver and green. The Andean Cock-of-the-rock and other sought-after species also appear in the area. The guide can work from a target bird list you send in advance, tailoring the route to species you most want to see. By 10:00 a.m. you return to Mindo Town.
Private transportation to the reserve is included, and entrance fees to the private birding reserve and hummingbird viewing sites are covered. The guide is available in English or Spanish, and the tour welcomes children from age five onward.
