Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Guided birdwatching and photography

  • Meet guide in Mindo, Ecuador
  • Use audio calls to attract birds
  • Spot toucans, tanagers, parrots, hummingbirds
  • Set up scopes and binoculars
  • Photograph local bird species
  • Enjoy approximately 4 hours of birdwatching

I’ll be honest — I almost missed the first toucan because I was fiddling with the binoculars (which are way heavier than I expected). Our guide, Diego, just grinned and did this little whistle — not sure if it was for me or the birds. Suddenly there was this flash of yellow and black above us, and he pointed so fast I nearly dropped my camera. That’s how our birdwatching tour in Ecuador started: a bit clumsy, but weirdly exciting.

The air smelled like wet leaves and something sweet I couldn’t name. Diego kept playing these audio calls from his phone — some sounded like squeaky toys, others like a flute underwater. It actually worked; parrots showed up in pairs, all noisy and bossy. He handed me the scope and adjusted it for my height (I’m short), then showed me how to line up a shot. My hands were shaking but somehow I got a decent photo of a tanager — those colors don’t look real until you see them up close.

We walked for maybe four hours? Time got strange out there. Sometimes we’d just stop and listen to nothing except wings flickering overhead or Diego whispering the names in Spanish. He laughed when I tried to repeat “colibrí” (hummingbird) — apparently my accent is hopeless. At one point it started to drizzle, soft enough that the leaves just glistened instead of dripping. There were moments when everyone went quiet at once, waiting for something rare to appear. I still think about that silence.
