The experience
Eight to nine hours total, starting with a 90-minute drive from your hotel in Cuenca to Ingapirca, where Ecuador's most significant archaeological complex sits in the Cañar province. Your guide walks you through the Cañari-Inca walls and the elliptical temple that once anchored the Tahuantinsuyo empire, explaining the two cultures that shaped the site. On clear days the Andean landscape opens up across the ruins.
After Ingapirca, another 90-minute drive takes you to the artisan cantons of Gualaceo and Chordeleg, with a local lunch stop on the way. In Chordeleg you visit jewelers and handicraft shops, then have free time in the central park. Gualaceo's central market shows the stalls where locals buy daily food and goods, and its colonial-era church and houses anchor the historic center. The Makanas workshop, eight kilometers outside Gualaceo, is where the Jimenez family demonstrates the Ikat technique. The hand-resist dyeing process that makes the region's shawls distinctive. You return to Cuenca by late afternoon.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is transport by private vehicle and a professional guide who speaks English or Spanish. Lunch is included in the group tour with lunch option and the private tour. The group option without lunch covers the same sites and guide but you arrange your own meal. Children from age five are welcome, and vegetarian meals are available with advance notice.

What exactly is the Ingapirca archaeological complex?
Ingapirca is Ecuador's most important archaeological site, built by the Cañari people and later incorporated into the Inca empire. The complex centers on an elliptical temple that was part of the Tahuantinsuyo (the Inca empire), and the site preserves Cañari-Inca walls and structures across multiple sectors that your guide explains as you walk through.
How much walking and climbing is involved in this tour?
The tour is designed for all fitness levels and requires little physical effort. You walk through the Ingapirca ruins at a pace your guide sets, visit shops and markets in Gualaceo and Chordeleg, and tour the textile workshop: all on relatively flat or gently sloped ground without strenuous climbing.
What's included in lunch, and can I get vegetarian food?
Lunch is a local meal provided on the group tour with lunch option and the private tour. The group option without lunch does not include it. Vegetarian meals are available if you request one when you book.

You visit both. The Makanas workshop includes a live demonstration of the Ikat shawl-making technique, and you also have time to browse and shop at jewelry stores in Chordeleg and the market stalls in Gualaceo's central market.
What's the difference between the group tour and the private tour?
The group tour shares the guide and vehicle with other travelers. The private tour is for your group alone. Both options visit the same sites and include the guide, pickup, and transport. Choose group with or without lunch depending on whether you want the meal included, or private if you prefer a dedicated vehicle and guide.
