You get picked up in Quito before dawn, driven to Cotopaxi National Park, guided through a two-hour trek to the 4,864m refuge with views of the snow-covered cone, then taken to Limpiopungo Lagoon for lunch and bird-watching. Transport, meals, and a guide who knows the altitude and the terrain are all included, so you don't arrange logistics yourself — you just show up ready to walk.
"How high does this thing go?" The question comes up in the van on the way out of Quito, and your guide will tell you: 5,897 meters, one of the world's highest active volcanoes, sitting 50 km from the city. You start early — pickup at the Hilton Colon at 7:30 am, or at the CarpeDM office in Old Town if you prefer — and by 9:30 you're at the Cotopaxi National Park entrance. The drive takes you through páramo grassland where wild horses graze, and the air gets noticeably thinner as you climb.
At the Mariscal Sucre Interpretation Centre, your guide walks you through what you're about to see: the volcanic geology, the animals that live at this altitude, how the snow and ice shape the cone. Then you drive to the 4,600m car park and start the trek on sandy scree toward the refuge at 4,864m. It's not a technical climb — no ropes, no scrambling — but the altitude and the loose ground mean you move slowly and deliberately. By 12:30 you're at the refuge, the snow-covered peak looming above, and then you head back down to the car park. The whole hike takes about two hours up and down, and your body will feel the elevation, so the pace is steady and the guide watches the group.
After the hike, you drive to Limpiopungo Lagoon, a glacial lake that sits like a mirror at the foot of the volcano. This is where you eat lunch at 3 pm — included in the tour — and where you can see waterfowl and the reflection of Volcán Rumiñahui across the water if the weather holds. By 4 pm you're heading back to Quito, arriving around 5 or 5:30 depending on traffic. The whole day is about nine hours door to door, and you'll have been above 4,500m for most of it.
Bring warm layers — it's cold at altitude, and the wind picks up in the afternoon — plus a waterproof jacket, gloves, a hat, and hiking boots with good grip for the scree. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential; the sun reflects hard off the snow and the altitude amplifies the UV. Eat a proper breakfast before pickup and bring extra snacks and water, because the altitude can make you feel less hungry than you actually are, and dehydration creeps up fast.
Your day includes hotel pickup in Quito, transport to and from Cotopaxi National Park, park entry, a guide who explains the geology and wildlife, a two-hour trek to the 4,864m refuge, a visit to Limpiopungo Lagoon, and lunch with a view of the snow-covered cone.
