The experience
The day starts with pickup at 8am from your Guayaquil hotel. The drive to Milagro takes about an hour, then another hour and a half to reach Bucay and the cloud forest. You spend the morning at an authentic family cacao farm learning how chocolate is made from the plant to the finished product, with time to taste what they produce. After the farm, you transfer to Bucay, a mountain town surrounded by cloud forest that sits at around 4,200 feet.
Once in the cloud forest, you hike the trails where you might spot toucans, parrots and other birds moving through the canopy. The hike takes you to three separate waterfalls. At each one you can swim and shower beneath the water. Between the forest and lunch, you get hands-on time with a trapiche, a traditional sugar cane press, to see how it works. A local lunch follows, and then the return drive to Guayaquil, arriving back at your hotel by late afternoon or early evening.
This is a private tour, so the pace and stops are yours alone. Your guide handles all the logistics and speaks either English or Spanish depending on what works for you. The full day runs about 10 to 11 hours door-to-door.
