Nine hours across three ecosystems: dry forest, mangrove boat tour, and wetland birding

A full-day birdwatching tour from Guayaquil to Churute Mangrove Reserve with a professional guide, hotel pickup and lunch included. You start in dry forest on the monkey trail, move to the mangrove estuary for a boat tour, then finish at wetland sites where horned screamers and other rare species live. The reserve holds over 300 bird species in its natural habitat.

The experience

The day starts at 6am with pickup from your Guayaquil hotel. A short wetland stop on the way sets the pace. You're watching birds before you reach the reserve. By 8am you're on the monkey trail in dry forest, binoculars ready for royal flycatchers, Ecuadorian trogons and Pacific horneros. The guide knows where to listen and look, and knows which species are moving through at this hour.

At 10:30am you board a boat to cross the mangrove estuary, the heart of Churute. The waterway winds through dense mangrove where different birds hunt and nest than the forest you left behind. By midday you've driven 30 minutes to Cacamango farm for a typical lunch and more birding in a working landscape. The afternoon takes you to La Lagartera wetland, where the horned screamer, a bird most travelers never see, lives among the reeds and shallow water.

You're back at your hotel by 4:30pm. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and carries binoculars, field guides and the knowledge of which species are likely on any given day. Lunch, transportation and all park access are included. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, water and insect repellent.

Bring comfortable shoes, water and a hat. The pace is set by the guide's knowledge of where birds are, not by a fixed itinerary.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

How many bird species can I expect to see at Churute?

Churute Mangrove Reserve holds over 300 bird species. The guide targets species like the royal flycatcher, horned screamer, white-bearded manakin, Ecuadorian trogon, roseate spoonbill and Peruvian pygmy owl depending on the season and time of day.

What's the difference between the dry forest, mangrove and wetland parts of the tour?

The dry forest on the monkey trail is where canopy birds like trogons and flycatchers hunt; the mangrove estuary you cross by boat is a different ecosystem with water-based species; the wetland sites like La Lagartera are shallow-water habitats where wading birds and the horned screamer live.

Do I need binoculars or bird identification experience?

Bring binoculars if you have them. They make spotting and detail much clearer. The guide does the heavy lifting on identification and will point out birds you'd miss alone, so no prior experience is needed.

What time does the tour start and end?

Pickup from your Guayaquil hotel is at 6am, with a stop at a wetland on the way. You arrive back at your hotel around 4:30pm after nine hours in the field.
