The experience

The guide picks you up at your hotel at 6 a.m. and drives you to Cerro Blanco, where you spend the first five hours walking the forest trails (the Canoa trail, the viewpoint trail, and around the administration center) looking for birds. The reserve's tropical dry forest ecosystem is home to species that exist nowhere else in the region: Spectacled Owl, Collared Forest-Falcon, Red-lored Parrot, Ecuadorian Trogon, Guayaquil Woodpecker, Whooping Mot-mot, and a dozen others on the target list. Because Cerro Blanco is a protected area, the birds remain in relatively high conservation status, which is why the reserve works for serious birdwatchers and casual nature lovers alike.

At 11 a.m. you stop for a snack in the parking area, then move to the lake park recreation area for the afternoon. By 2 p.m. the activity ends and you're driven back to your hotel, arriving around 3 p.m. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and the tour includes transportation from your hotel, a box lunch, and a professional who knows where to find the birds the reserve is known for. Bring lightweight clothing, hiking shoes, a hat, binoculars if you have them, and water. The operator provides mosquito repellent.
