The experience
The day starts at the Mira viewpoint above Baños, where two high platforms give a first look at the Amazon canopy below. From there you move into the Hola Vida ecological reserve to walk the forest and swim at the base of a 21-meter waterfall. The water is cold and the pool sits deep in protected tropical forest. After drying off, you head to lunch at a local restaurant where the menu runs to grilled chicken or meat, vegetable soup, and a cold guayusa tea made from native plants.
The afternoon centers on the Puyo River, where you board a typical canoe (the same vessel Kichwa communities use to travel between settlements), and paddle downriver for a slow-water descent that lets you see traditional houses built along the banks. You then land at Cotococha, a Kichwa village on the river where residents demonstrate ancestral dances in one of the community cabins, show you the animals that roam freely there, and share the rhythms of daily life in the jungle. The tour continues to Indichuris, a second Kichwa viewpoint higher in the forest, where you can rest in hammocks and try the extreme swing if you choose.
The final stop is a working cacao farm where you participate in the roasting, cleaning and grinding of cacao beans to make chocolate paste from scratch. You taste the result (a cup of hot chocolate and a cassava tortilla with cheese), though the tasting carries a small extra charge. The route back passes through Puyo, the regional hub known as the city of cinnamon and the heart of the Amazon lowlands.
