The Experience

“Try not to slip,” our guide Marco grinned, handing me a pair of rubber boots that looked like they’d seen more jungle than I ever would. The air was thick and sweet, almost syrupy, and it clung to my skin as we started down the muddy trail near Puyo. We stopped every few minutes for Marco to point out something—tiny ants carrying leaves bigger than themselves, or a tree that smelled oddly like licorice when he scraped the bark. I didn’t expect the sound of frogs to be so loud in daylight, honestly. When we finally reached Hola Vida waterfall, I just stood there for a second—water crashing hard enough to drown out everything else. I waded in up to my knees; freezing but worth it.

The canoe ride on the Puyo River was quieter than I thought it’d be—just the slap of water against wood and someone’s laugh drifting from another boat upstream. Our guide said if we were lucky we might spot an otter or kingfisher, but mostly I just watched the green blur of rainforest slide by. Later at the Quechua community, an elder painted my face with achiote (I probably looked ridiculous), and then we tried some kind of dance that had everyone clapping along except me—I have two left feet even in rubber boots. Someone handed me a woven bracelet made from seeds; I still keep it in my backpack.

We ended up at this family-run cacao farm called El Paraiso. There was this earthy smell—roasted beans and woodsmoke—and they showed us how chocolate starts out sticky and pale before turning dark and bitter-sweet. We tasted warm chocolate with yuca tortillas right there in their kitchen while rain hammered on the roof outside. I think that’s what stuck with me most—the way everyone laughed together over something as simple as melted chocolate and rain.
