The experience

The tour starts at Pusuno Bajo, where staff meet you and handle luggage transport to Suchipakari Jungle Eco-Lodge. After settling in, your first day includes a guided rainforest hike to learn about medicinal plants like dragon's blood and ginger, a chance to swing on vines and stand beneath the Great Ceibo, a massive Amazonian tree, then a float down the Pusuno River on inner tubes before a night excursion to spot owls, fishing bats, tarantulas, and frogs with a flashlight and guide.

Day two opens with optional activities: a dawn birdwatching tour, or a choice of four waterfall hikes. The Rumi Yaku waterfall involves a five-hour round trip through primary rainforest. Other options like Rayucocha offer demanding ancient trails, or you can visit Umbuni waterfall and Paicawe Lagoon. A paddle-canoe ride through the Kawana Fauna Production Lagoon Reserve shows two distinct ecosystems, and the afternoon brings you to Misahualli port, where monkeys play in the forest canopy above the beach and the Misahualli and Napo rivers meet: a spot to watch the sunset and browse local crafts before returning to the lodge.

Day three is a full Napo River excursion. After breakfast, a covered boat carries you downriver for roughly 1.5 hours to AmaZoonico, a wildlife sanctuary caring for injured and rescued animals. Next is Anaconda Island and Caiman Lake, where you spot hoatzins, woolly monkeys, macaws, anacondas, and squirrel monkeys while eating a boxed lunch. A visit to a Kichwa community follows, where members share their customs and daily life, and you stop at a ceramic crafts workshop before returning to the lodge for dinner and optional spa treatments.

The final morning takes you through the Chocolate Route on an organic finca where cacao trees grow alongside tropical fruits and medicinal plants. You learn the harvesting, fermentation, and drying process for the lodge's "fine aroma" cocoa, then the art of chocolate making. After a break, checkout happens by midday and staff assist with luggage for your onward travels.
