The experience

You depart from Tena by mid-morning and travel east through the jungle, passing Monkey's Beach at Misahualli before arriving at the eco-lodge on the Pusuno River by noon. After lunch and a brief orientation, you walk into primary and secondary forest for roughly three hours with a naturalist guide, then float back downriver on a buoy in your life jacket. That night, a flashlight hike takes you into the nocturnal rainforest to listen for fishing bats, owls, frogs and the sounds that only emerge after dark.

Day two opens with a breakfast of tropical fruit from the lodge's organic farm, then you choose among three full-day options. One follows the Napo River by canoe for 35 minutes to the Kamak Maki Museum, where you walk the rainforest and learn about Indigenous instruments used in hunting and ritual. Another canoe trip visits Kichwa communities to see cacao and medicinal plant cultivation, then continues to Kawana Lagoon to watch for monkeys and birds. A third option takes you to Misahualli, where resident monkeys roam the beach and town center. Afternoons are free to swim in the lodge pool, paddle a kayak on the lagoon, or book a massage or chocolate exfoliation at the spa.

Day three begins with breakfast, then a guide takes you through the Chocolate Route to explore cacao trees, learn fermentation and drying methods at the agrotourism project, and see how chocolate is made. By early afternoon you return to Tena, where your guide helps coordinate onward travel to Baños or Quito. Bilingual guides lead all activities. Rubber boots and life jackets are provided, and all meals, entrance fees and lodge stays are covered.
