The experience
The tour starts at the Arajuno River bridge at 10:00 AM, where a one-hour canoe ride takes you upstream to camp. After lunch and a cold drink, you'll take a short canoe trip to the start of a two-hour guided trek through the rainforest: an introduction to the ecosystem and its wildlife before returning to camp for dinner and stories about shamanism and local folklore. The Kichwa guides lead every walk and paddle, speaking English or Spanish.
Day two begins early with a 10-minute canoe trip to a parrot clay lick, where dozens of colorful parrots (dusky-headed and blue-headed species among them) gather to eat minerals from the cliff face. After breakfast back at camp, the local Kichwa community welcomes you to their school and shares the projects your visit supports. Kichwa women then teach you to make chicha, the traditional fermented drink, and you'll eat lunch together. The afternoon is free to rest by the river before heading to a nearby farm, where you'll see what grows in the jungle and make your own chocolate fondue from cacao.
Accommodation is in glamping tents for two nights with all meals prepared by local women using ingredients from the forest and the community farms. The canoe rides, guides, and transport back to the bridge on the final morning are included. Groups max out at 12 people, and the camp welcomes children from age 4.
