The experience

The day starts at Three Eyes National Park, where three water-filled caves sit inside a natural park that doubles as one of the country's most visited attractions. You'll explore the limestone formations (one cave was used for Jurassic Park filming), and have access to bathroom facilities and a cafeteria before the group moves on. From there, the tour heads to the Columbus Lighthouse, a multi-million-dollar structure built in 1992 to mark 400 years since Columbus's arrival. It houses the explorer's remains and sits as a landmark visible across the city.

The heart of the day unfolds in the Colonial Zone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the oldest streets in the Americas run narrow and tight. You'll walk through Columbus Park, where a towering statue of Columbus faces the oldest cathedral in the hemisphere, then move into the Columbus Palace (the Alcázar de Colón), completed in 1514 as the home of Diego Columbus and his wife María de Toledo. The palace holds 16th-century furniture, art and weapons across winding staircases and a crystal-chandelier reception hall. Calle Las Damas, the first paved street in the New World, connects these sites. It's lined with former colonial buildings now serving as museums, embassies and hotels, and marks where María de Toledo and her ladies would walk in the evenings. The National Pantheon, resting place of Dominican national heroes, and Fortaleza Ozama, the first fortress in the Americas, anchor this stretch.

The tour also passes the National Palace, home to the Dominican president since 1947, and includes a Dominican-style lunch partway through. Your guide speaks one of five languages (English, Spanish, French, Italian or German), and hotel pickup and drop-off are part of the price. The full outing, including travel time, runs six hours.
