The Experience
The day starts with a 50-minute drive from Punta Cana through Dominican countryside, passing rice, coffee and cocoa plantations while your guide explains local culture and farming. You'll reach Montaña Redonda first — a 1,000-foot summit accessed by safari truck — where the panoramic views stretch across the island's northeast coast. From there, it's an hour to Los Haitises National Park, where you board a boat to navigate mangroves and spot the endangered Ridgway's Hawk, Hispaniolan Woodpecker, pelicans and frigate birds in flight over the landscape. The rocks jutting from the water reach 98 feet high, and you'll explore caves where Taíno people lived more than 500 years ago, seeing the handmade pictographic paintings still visible on the walls.
After the park, a 45-minute drive takes you to Yanigua, where the afternoon shifts into a different rhythm. You'll walk through more than 15 types of plantations, visit a 125-foot-tall treehouse called Tarzan's Treehouse with views down into the valley, and see the blue amber mine. Then comes the waterfall itself — you swim under it while an all-natural clay spa treatment covers your skin, and lunch is served at the edge of the water. The all-you-can-eat buffet and non-alcoholic open bar (beers available for purchase) stay open while you're there. The return drive to Punta Cana takes two hours.
This is a private tour, so your group travels alone with the guide. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and bottled water comes throughout the day. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two other languages, depending on which option you book at checkout. Children have their own seat, and infants sit on an adult's lap. The operator asks that you eat breakfast before leaving your hotel and wear comfortable clothes and shoes for the hiking and water activities.
