The Experience

The day starts before dawn with pickup from your hotel in Punta Cana or Bayahibe, then a scenic drive through the Dominican countryside to the fishing village of Miches. Breakfast waits at the pier before you board the boat for Samaná Bay, where humpback whales arrive each year between mid-January and mid-April. Your guide shares what draws these animals—weighing more than twenty times a car—to these waters, and you watch for breaches, tail slaps and the behaviors that make the migration visible from the deck.

After the whale watching, you trade the boat for a safari truck that climbs to the summit of Montaña Redonda. The panoramic views open across ocean, mountains and lagoons. A traditional Dominican lunch arrives at a restaurant on the summit, and afterward you have time at the famous swings and hammocks scattered across the viewpoints for photos. The whole day runs about ten to eleven hours, with water and non-alcoholic beverages provided throughout.
