The experience

The day starts at Las Cañitas, where you board the boat and head into Samaná Bay toward the Humpback Whale Sanctuary. The whale watching portion lasts around 45 minutes: long enough to watch these creatures move through the bay without the rush of a quick pass-through. After that window closes, the boat continues to Cayo Levantado, the island known for its white sand and clear water.

Arrival at Cayo Levantado brings a beachfront lunch of fresh seafood and traditional Dominican dishes, then several hours to move at your own pace. A designated semi-private area with beach chairs is set up for you. From there, you can swim, walk the island or simply stay put. The afternoon is yours to structure. There's no schedule pushing you through a list of activities.

As the day winds down, you board the boat for the return to Las Cañitas, where transportation takes you back to your hotel. The guide speaks English or Spanish throughout, and children from age 6 are welcome on the tour. Note that starting April 1st, this same tour continues but without the whale watching component, so the timing of your booking matters if seeing the migration is the draw.
