Learning to surf with someone else catching waves alongside you

You get hotel pickup, a 15-minute sand lesson on technique and safety, then time in the water with an instructor who watches your group of two or three. The lesson splits into two sessions with a water and fruit break in between. Surfboard, rash guard, and return transport are included. The Experience

You'll probably wonder if you can actually stand up on a board in salt water, and then your instructor will show you on the sand first. The lesson starts at your hotel with pickup, and by the time you reach Macao Beach you've already got a surfboard and rash guard waiting. One instructor works with two or three of you at a time, which means real feedback instead of shouting from the shore, but also that you'll take turns in the water while someone else rides a wave.

If you've never surfed, the first fifteen minutes happen on the beach—safety, how to paddle, how to pop up and stand without falling backward into the ocean. Intermediate and advanced surfers skip that part and go straight in after a quick evaluation, but either way your instructor stays close in the water, watching your balance and helping you pick which waves are actually rideable instead of the ones that'll just dump you. The whole thing runs in two sessions with a break between, and they bring coconut water and fresh fruit so you're not parched and starving by the time you're done.

Round-trip transportation from your hotel is included, which saves you the negotiation of finding a ride to Macao Beach and back. Bring a towel and sunscreen—the Dominican sun doesn't wait for you to remember it—and if you want photos or lunch after, bring a bit of cash. The minimum age is four, though honestly a four-year-old on a surfboard is more about the memory than the technique.
