The Experience

The first thing I noticed stepping outside Amber Cove was the way the air smelled—like salt and something sweet, maybe from the fruit stalls nearby. Our guide, Miguel, waved us over with a grin so big you couldn’t help but smile back. He started telling stories about San Felipe de Puerto Plata before we’d even climbed into the van. The ride through town felt like flipping through an old photo album—Victorian houses painted in faded blues and yellows, people waving from shady porches. At one point, Miguel pointed out a group of kids chasing a soccer ball down Umbrella Street (yes, it really is covered in umbrellas overhead—looked almost surreal against the sky).

I didn’t expect to get caught up in history, but standing at Parque Independencia while Miguel talked about the fight for independence made me pause. There’s this old tree in the square where locals gather; someone was playing dominoes and laughing so loud it echoed off the pink walls of La Calle Rosa (Pink Street). I tried to say “Paseo de Dona Blanca” like he did—no luck, got a laugh anyway. The whole place just buzzes with color and music, even when you’re just passing through. We drove along the Atlantic Malecon after that—the ocean on one side, city life on the other. It’s funny how quickly you go from city energy to that wide-open blue.

Dorada Beach is where everything slows down. The sand felt warm under my feet (too hot at first—learned my lesson). They handed me their signature rum punch as soon as I claimed a lounger—tasted like summer and maybe too much fun if you’re not careful. Some folks went straight for the water; I just lay back listening to waves and distant bachata music drifting from the bar. There were showers if you needed them, and staff who’d bring more drinks or food if you waved them over (I recommend trying whatever they’re grilling). Two hours went by faster than I thought possible—I still think about that view whenever I hear seagulls now.
