Summary

Puerto Plata flavors, cable car views, rum tasting and city rhythm

You’ll ride Puerto Plata’s famous cable car up Mt Isabel for sweeping views, sample eight kinds of local rum with stories from your guide, enjoy lunch in a sunny Victorian courtyard, and even try rolling your own cigar before heading back to port—expect laughter, music, and real Dominican warmth all day long.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me was the smell—sweet, almost grassy, as we stepped off the bus near the cable car station in Puerto Plata. Our guide, Ana, was already cracking jokes about “Dominican time” while we waited for the next ride up Mt Isabel. The view from the top? I mean, you see it on postcards but it’s different when you’re actually there—the sea just sprawls out under you and the air feels cooler than down by the port. I kept touching the railing, cold metal sticky from the morning mist.

We wandered through a botanical garden up there (I didn’t expect orchids to grow wild like that), then headed back down for what Ana called “the real reason people come to Puerto Plata”—rum. Eight types lined up at this old distillery—each one stronger than the last. I tried to keep up with everyone else but after the fourth sip my notes got a little wobbly. The guy pouring laughed and told me his favorite is only for “brave hearts.” Not sure I qualified.

Lunch was in this old Victorian house with a courtyard full of sunlight and plants everywhere—felt like someone’s grandma’s place if your grandma made perfect rice and beans and let you try Mama Juana (that’s their local herbal drink; tastes sweet but sneaks up on you). Someone at another table started dancing and suddenly half of us were clapping along. There was this moment where our group tried rolling cigars—mine looked more like a lumpy breadstick than anything you’d want to smoke, but nobody cared. That’s what stuck with me—the way everyone just… relaxed together. Even now I think about that afternoon sometimes when things get too noisy back home.
