The Experience

We tumbled out of the minivan at Macao Beach, still wiping sleep from our eyes — I guess I didn’t expect the air to smell so salty and sweet at once. Our guide, José, grinned when he saw us hesitate at the edge of the sand. “Locals come here early,” he said, pointing to a group already laughing in the surf. The water was that kind of clear where you can see your toes even when you’re knee-deep. I tried to say “buenos días” to a fisherman untangling his net — probably mangled it, but he smiled anyway. There’s something about the way people greet you here, like they’re letting you in on a secret.

After rinsing off my feet (sand everywhere — still finding it in my shoes), we drove through little towns toward Higüey. The road was bumpy in places; José kept up a steady stream of stories about Dominican history and why everyone seems to know someone’s cousin here. When we pulled up to Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, I felt small under those arches. Inside was hushed except for a few murmured prayers and the faint scent of wax candles. José explained how important this place is for Dominicans — not just for faith but as part of their identity. I’m not religious, but standing there with sunlight filtering through colored glass, it felt… grounding? Hard to explain.

The drive back was quieter — maybe we were all thinking about what we’d seen or just tired from the heat. Someone passed around coconut candies from a roadside stand (sticky fingers, worth it). I caught myself watching the palm trees flicker past and wondered if I’d ever really understood what makes a place feel alive until today.
