The experience
The program starts at the dive center with a briefing on diving theory, covering the essentials you need to know before entering the water. Your instructor walks you through how the equipment works and answers any questions. They're trained to work with complete beginners, and the pace is entirely yours. Once you've absorbed the basics, you head out on a short boat ride to a shallow dive site designed for first-timers, where the water conditions are calm and controlled.
In the water, your instructor stays with you while you practice foundational skills: how to breathe through the regulator, how to equalize pressure, how to move with the equipment. The site itself, called Confined Open Water, feels more like a pool than open ocean, which means you can focus on getting comfortable instead of managing variables. Once you're ready, you're breathing underwater, swimming past tropical fish, all under direct supervision. The whole experience takes around three hours from start to finish.
If you fall in love with diving, your instructor can tell you about upgrading to PADI Open Water Certification at a reduced rate. The program works for anyone, regardless of swimming ability or fitness level, and kids as young as ten can join if a parent or guardian signs the paperwork on site.
