The experience

Twenty-seven waterfalls and the pools they've carved into limestone over time make up the Damajagua system, located deep in a tropical rainforest. The day starts with pickup at your hotel in Cabarete, Sosua or Puerto Plata, then a drive to the trailhead. A local guide outfits you with a helmet, water shoes and life jacket before the 45-minute uphill hike through jungle landscape to the 12th waterfall. The hike is moderate in difficulty and sets you up for what comes next.

From the 12th fall, you head back down-river and the real action begins: you jump, slide and swim your way through a series of waterfalls, canyons and pools. The jumps go up to 25 feet, but if you'd rather not jump, your guide shows you an alternate way down each one. The pools are deep enough to swim in, and the whole descent is built around moving through the water and the landscape at once, not watching it from a distance.

After you change into dry clothes, lunch is a buffet included in the price. Bottled water comes with you throughout the day. The tour runs 7 to 8 hours total, so plan the rest of your day around a full morning and early afternoon commitment. Bring an extra set of dry clothes and a waterproof camera if you want photos. Regular cameras won't survive the water.

Is this one for you?Hotel pickup from Cabarete, Sosua or Puerto Plata means you don't need a car or a ride to reach the trailhead, so the whole day works whether you're staying in town or renting accommodations without transport. The 45-minute hike and the jumps demand moderate fitness, so it suits travelers who are comfortable hiking and moving through water, not a leisurely walk.
