The experience

You drive the 4-wheel yourself, not a passenger watching someone else operate it. After hotel pickup from Cabarete, Sosúa or Playa Dorada, the guide meets you at Montellano in Puerto Plata Province and runs through a short briefing on how to handle the vehicle. All ATVs are built to be easy to ride, and the guide stays with you throughout. Wear clothes you don't mind getting muddy and bring sunglasses. The terrain shifts between dusty stretches, mud and wet sections as you move through the sugar cane fields.

The route takes you off-road through the Dominican landscape toward Playa Bergantín, where you stop to swim. The whole outing runs about four hours from pickup to drop-off, which means you're back at your hotel by early afternoon with the rest of your day open.
