Private Whale and Dolphin Watching Boat Tour in Dominica
Three hours searching the open water for whales, dolphins, and the songs they make underwater
A private whale and dolphin watching tour in Dominica operates on smaller vessels or a luxury catamaran, with a marine naturalist narrating sightings as you cruise several miles out to sea. The tour includes a hydrophone to listen to whale songs, sodas and bottled water, Tiffany's Rum Punch, and life jackets; plan to get wet from ocean spray. Pickup by boat is available as an add-on option.
Step-by-step itinerary
Whale and dolphin watching tour
- See the island while heading out
- Travel several miles out at sea
- Visit the home of the whales
The Experience
You board a private vessel—25, 29 or 36 feet, or a luxury catamaran if you choose it—and head out into the warm Caribbean waters off Dominica. The boat travels several miles offshore, where a marine naturalist guides the search and explains what you're seeing as whales and dolphins appear. A hydrophone lets you listen to whale songs underwater, turning the sightings into something you can hear as well as watch. Sodas, bottled water, and Tiffany's Rum Punch are on board; life jackets are provided and required during the tour.
Ocean spray and light rain can occur, so expect to get wet—it's part of the experience on a low-to-water boat. The tour runs three hours, which is the window the operator has found works for getting far enough out to find marine life and back. If you book the pickup option, the boat collects you and returns you by water, removing the need to arrange your own transport to the dock.
Reef-safe sunscreen only; no spray sunscreen is permitted to protect the marine environment. Infants and small children can come along—infant life jackets are available if you ask before departure. The tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, though it suits all other fitness levels.
