The Experience

The day starts in Roseau with a pass through the Old Market, where the guide explains the square's role in the island's colonial past—slave sales, punishment, and now the work of local artisans. From there, the van moves north to the Indian River, where you board a rowboat and drift into a tunnel of mangroves. The river narrows as you go deeper, and the guide points out the history woven into the landscape and the ecology of the waterway itself. There's no shade on the boat, so sun protection matters; life jackets are provided if you want one.

After the river, you visit Cold Soufrière, a natural volcanic phenomenon inside the Morne Aux Diables caldera—a geothermal site where you can see and feel the distinct cold volcanic features that set this spot apart from typical hot springs. Fort Shirley comes next, the centerpiece of Cabrits National Park. The British built most of it, but the French added significantly during their occupation from 1778 to 1784. At its peak, the fort housed over 600 soldiers, artisans and support staff across one main fort, seven gun batteries, seven cisterns, powder magazines, barracks and officers' quarters. The 1802 revolt of the 8th West India Regiment happened here—a moment the guide will place in context as you walk the grounds.

Lunch is included, along with sodas and bottled water throughout the day. The tour runs about five hours total, and the van is air-conditioned for the drive between sites.
