The Experience

I’ll be honest — I signed up for this e-bike tour around Copenhagen mostly because I’d seen a photo of Little Tilde peeking out from the reeds and thought, “Yeah, I want to find her.” But it turned out to be more than just a treasure hunt. The air smelled like wet grass that morning, and our guide Mikkel showed up with this grin like he’d just heard a good joke. He handed me a helmet and checked if I’d ever ridden an e-bike (I hadn’t — he promised it was easier than regular cycling). We set off through Glostrup first, past quiet houses with laundry flapping in the wind.

The whole thing felt kind of like being in on a secret. Each of the four Forgotten Giants — Sleeping Louis, Little Tilde, Thomas on the Mountain, Teddy Friendly — is hidden in its own pocket of Zealand’s nature. Sometimes we’d glide along smooth bike paths under big grey Danish skies; other times we’d bump over roots or slow down for dog walkers who always seemed to nod hello. Mikkel told us about Thomas Dambo’s art using only recycled wood — apparently some locals even donate old planks. At one point I tried to say “genbrug” (recycling) and totally butchered it; Mikkel laughed and said my accent was “very international.”

I still think about the moment we found Teddy Friendly tucked between trees in Valensbæk — there was this hush except for birds and someone’s distant radio. It made me want to whisper for no reason. The e-bike did most of the work so even when we hit a hill near Høje Taastrup, it wasn’t hard (though my legs still felt it later). We stopped for water and just sat looking at Thomas on the Mountain staring off into nothing. Not sure why but that stuck with me.
