The Experience

We’d barely stepped off the tram in Josefov when our guide, Eva, waved us over—she had this soft way of speaking but somehow made even the street noise fade. Right away, she handed us little paper tickets for the Jewish Museum (I nearly dropped mine in a puddle) and led us through these narrow cobbled lanes. The Maisel Synagogue was first. I remember the smell—old wood and something like dust mixed with candle wax. Eva pointed out names on the wall, tracing her finger gently as if she knew them. I didn’t expect to feel so much just from seeing names.

The Pinkas Synagogue caught me off guard. The walls are covered—absolutely filled—with handwritten names of Holocaust victims from Bohemia and Moravia. It’s quiet inside, except for some shuffling feet and one kid whispering questions to his dad in Czech. I tried to read a few names out loud under my breath; felt strange but right somehow. Outside, we wandered into the Old Jewish Cemetery—graves stacked on graves, stones leaning every direction like they’re all trying to listen in. Eva told us about Rabbi Loew and the Golem legend (her eyes lit up at that part). The air was cold but not sharp; I kept rubbing my hands together.

I got a little lost in thought walking between headstones—some dates so faded you have to squint. There was this moment when an older man paused beside me and nodded at a stone; he just said “family” quietly and moved on. I still think about that moment. We stopped at the Old-New Synagogue too—the oldest active synagogue in Europe, apparently—and Eva explained why it looks half-sunken below street level (floods, centuries of city growing up around it).
