itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Folklore dinner and traditional show

  • Greet with mead toasting
  • Enjoy traditional dancing and singing
  • Try singing with performers
  • Learn national dances like Mazurka
  • Choose from 4-course Czech dinner menu
  • Eat dinner served at table or buffet
  • Enjoy unlimited drinks throughout evening
  • Sing national songs with band

The first thing that hit me was the honey smell from the mead they handed us at the door — sweet but sharp, and somehow it made me feel like I’d stepped out of modern Prague for a second. Our guide, Petra, grinned and told us not to sip too fast (“it’s stronger than you think!”). The room was already buzzing with music — fiddles, clapping — and people in these bright embroidered costumes weaving between tables. I didn’t expect to feel so welcome right away.

I’m not usually the type to join group dances (my coordination is… questionable), but after a couple sips of wine and watching everyone else jump up for the mazurka, I just went for it. One of the dancers — I think his name was Tomas — showed me the steps. Not sure I ever got it right but we laughed a lot, and nobody cared if you missed a beat. The band played old songs from Bohemia and Moravia; some guests even tried singing along. There was this moment when the whole room kind of hummed together — hard to explain, but it felt good.

The food came out in waves: roast duck with crispy skin (I kept sneaking extra potatoes), then some soup I couldn’t pronounce but loved anyway. They really do keep your glass full here — beer or wine, whatever you want. If you’re vegetarian or need halal or kosher options, they ask ahead so you’re sorted. Kids at another table got their own little menu and these funny paper crowns; one of them kept waving at the accordion player like he was royalty.

By dessert (some poppy seed thing that reminded me of my grandma’s baking), everyone seemed a bit looser, swapping stories or just listening as the musicians played softer tunes. At the end, we all tried singing something from our own countries with the band — mine was off-key but nobody minded. Walking out into the Prague night after all that noise and warmth felt almost too quiet. I still think about that last song sometimes.
