The experience

I’ll be honest. I almost missed the pickup because I was wrestling with my jacket zipper (classic). Our guide, Petra, just grinned when I apologized and said something about “Czech time” being flexible. The drive out of Prague was quick, maybe 25 minutes? We passed these little gardens with gnomes in them. I still wonder if that’s a thing here or just this neighborhood.

The bobsled track looked way steeper in person than online. Kids were squealing already. Petra handed us our tickets for five rides each and told us not to brake too early (“or you’ll crawl like a snail,” she joked). First run: honestly, my stomach dropped at the first curve. You can hit 50km/h but it feels faster when you’re low to the ground and the wind is cold on your face. My hands smelled faintly metallic from gripping the brake lever so tight. One of the staff waved at me after my third go, maybe he recognized my nervous laugh?

Lunch was outside in this garden area where you could watch people zoom past on the track. The grill smoke mixed with spring grass and someone’s perfume drifting over from another table. I tried to order “klobása” like Petra suggested. She laughed when I butchered it (fair). Food tasted better than I expected after all that adrenaline; or maybe everything does when you’re hungry and a bit shaky.

I keep thinking about that first drop on the track, how loud everything got for a second before it turned into laughter.
