The Experience

I didn’t expect my legs to burn before we even reached Letná Park, but that first hill out of the bike shop in Prague got me. Our guide, Petr, just grinned and said, “Don’t worry, it gets easier after this.” He was right—sort of. The air smelled like wet grass from last night’s rain and there was this faint hum of trams below as we rode along the Vltava River. I kept glancing up at those old bridges—Charles Bridge off in the distance—and realized how different everything looked from a bike seat.

Petr pointed out the Metronome on the hill (apparently it used to be a giant statue of Stalin—who knew?), and we stopped for a breather. There were students lounging nearby with bottles of Kofola and someone playing guitar, slightly out of tune. The view over Prague’s rooftops is something I still think about—it’s not just pretty; it’s layered and busy and kind of chaotic in a good way. You can see the castle, spires everywhere, little red roofs stacked up tight. We coasted through Letná Park after that, dodging dogs and joggers.

Rolling up to Prague Castle felt surreal—the stones under my wheels were slick from drizzle and I was half-worried I’d tip over in front of everyone (didn’t happen). Petr told us stories about kings who’d walked these courtyards centuries ago. The square echoed with footsteps and camera shutters; you could smell roasting chestnuts from a cart nearby. Afterward we cut through Petrin park for another city view—I almost missed it because I was distracted by someone’s dog chasing pigeons.

We finished near the National Theatre, which Petr called “the country’s most beautiful stage.” Maybe he’s biased but it did look grand with gold trim catching late sun. By then my legs were jelly but honestly? I kind of wanted to keep riding just to see what was around the next corner.
