The Experience

The day starts at Salamis, the ancient capital of Cyprus that once held 150,000 people during the Roman period. You walk through a Roman theatre, a gymnasium with thermal baths, and see mosaics that have survived two millennia. From there the route turns west to Famagusta, the medieval walled city that was once the richest in the world. The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque dominates the skyline—originally the 14th-century Cathedral of St. Nicholas, a masterpiece of French Gothic where Lusignan kings were crowned, it now stands as a striking fusion of Christian and Islamic architecture. You wander the ancient streets past ruined churches and noble palaces, then see Varosha, the abandoned resort district frozen in time since 1974, a haunting symbol of the island's recent history.

Kyrenia comes next, and the harbour is where most travelers linger. The horseshoe-shaped waterfront lined with stone warehouses turned cafes offers the most picturesque spot on the island. Kyrenia Castle dominates the entrance to the old harbour—a fortress that began as a 7th-century Byzantine defense against Arab raids, was fortified by Crusaders, and expanded by Venetians into its current massive form. Inside the castle walls sits the Shipwreck Museum, housing a 2,300-year-old Greek merchant vessel, the oldest of its kind ever recovered from the seabed, still holding its original cargo of amphoras, grain mills and almonds from the age of Alexander the Great's successors. High on the ramparts, the views across the harbour and the Mediterranean are the most spectacular on the island. Before leaving Kyrenia, you visit Bellapais Abbey, a 13th-century Gothic masterpiece perched in the foothills of the Kyrenia Mountains. The cloisters and refectory are remarkably preserved, and the surrounding hillside village inspired Lawrence Durrell's memoir Bitter Lemons of Cyprus.

The final stop is Nicosia, the last divided capital in Europe. You see the Selimiye Mosque, originally the 13th-century Cathedral of Saint Sophia and the largest Gothic structure on the island, its French-style arches and flying buttresses now crowned with Ottoman minarets—800 years of history carved into stone. The Kyrenia Gate, built by Venetians in 1567, shows the same layering of eras: Venetian stone, Ottoman dome, British inscriptions. At the Büyük Han, the most beautiful Ottoman caravanserai on the island, built in 1572, you see the atmospheric central courtyard with its small mosque raised on pillars, now filled with artisan workshops and traditional cafes.
